Come on, Friends fans, you know you love this one!
Erik and I have had our fair share of gluttonous meals recently - just in time for the holidays, dontcha know.
Ellen and I visited The Shake Shack in Downtown Overland Park a few weeks ago. The burger was great and the fries were a little greasy, but because they had JUST come out of the fryer. Everything is made to order and the owners are so nice - check it out! (Photo courtesy of Hot Blog on a Stick, a good local KC food blog).
Our second stop was Frida's last Friday night. It is seriously good contemporary Mexican food in south Johnson County. My parents have been several times and have raved about it - Erik was going to jump out of his skin if he didn't get there soon. We shared the pork tacos with a citrus-y braise, and the steak tacos with guac, onion and cilantro. Delicious, and good ritas! Get there. SOON. (Photo courtesy of The Pitch).
On Saturday night, Erik and I braved the snow and had a really fun dinner with my boss/co-worker and her husband at Grunauer. It was exactly the kind of food you would want to eat on the coldest night of the year (thus far, oh help us). The story of this restaurant is really neat - they have a sister restaurant in Austria that has been there for years and years, and the son and grandkids use the same recipes at the restaurant in KC. Erik ordered this amazing pork shank and even the two of us couldn't finish the leftovers the next day. I had the weiner schnitzel and spaetzle and it was the perfect comfort food.
Finally, we are starting to explore Indian food. Lots of friends have told us about this place or that place, but I never thought I liked Indian food. I finally realized that, while I'm so-so on traditional curry, I really love most of the spices and foods used in Indian cooking. We finally made it to Paradise India after trying their food at my mom's Healthy Food and Good Wine event in the spring. It was really good and the owner is so nice. Their garlic naan bread is amazing (not theirs below, but quite similar).
So, if you tire of the turkey and eggnog, give one of these places a try!

Great post, and I know the restauranteurs will appreciate the mentions.
Molly-John and I bought some amazing Indiann "quesadillas" with fabulous sauces to smear over them at our local farmer's market. I'm guessing it is naan with a filling (one was lentil, the other potato) and the sauces were spicy and delicious. They freeze well, but we couldn't keep the sauces forever. Must go back! The tastes linger on your tongue because the spices are so pungent. Wonderful!
