I had my first one of these in Fort Worth and it was tasty, but SO strong that I could only drink about 1 inch of it.
My second attempt was last weekend at R Bar in the West Bottoms. It was SO refreshing and, lo and behold, I sucked it right down. (By the by, our meal there was fantastic, but the chef left last weekend, so sorry about that for the rest of you).
My version of a Moscow Mule
- juice of 1 lime (the best tool to squeeze a lime is kitchen tongs - put half a lime between the arms of the tongs and squeeze away)
- vodka (I don't add much, and you could even make this sans vodka and it would still be great)
- ginger beer (this is non-alcoholic and VERY ginger-y. R Bar uses Cock & Bull, but our store only had another kind)
- sugar or simple syrup if needed (judge this based on the sugar content of your ginger beer. Mine is full of sugar, so I don't add any)
- Top with ice and stir.
- Say it with me: Mmmmmmmm.
(Just realized this is remarkably similar to The Paloma, our poor-man's version of a margarita that we serve at Cinco de Mayo. Sub tequila for the vodka and grapefruit soda for the ginger beer and there you have it. Plus a pinch of salt.)
What is your favorite refreshing summer beverage?? Do tell.

Makes me thirsty! You know I'll try it...
Glad you posted this Molly. I saw some ginger beer at my Mexican grocery store a few weeks ago, and wondered what I might make with it. These bottles were sold individually, and they were about $2 each. Not sure of the brand. You can also add rum and float some orange slices in it for another drink, whose name escapes me...but it is equally good. Nice summer adult beverages....!
Sarah has been a huge fan since we moved to Austin. Her grandfather, Charlie Fisk (Fiji and KU grad '52), told us the only ginger beer worthy is Cock and Bull. He also sent us original copper mugs that he found on eBay. It's the proper way to enjoy a mule.
