Zoo, take Two

The weather was great today, so we grabbed Aunt Betsy and headed to the zoo bright and early. We had a much more successful trip today! The key was getting there a little before opening to get a good parking spot, heading straight to Africa, taking the tram back when we were done, and leaving! It was cool(ish) and we had many of the exhibits to ourselves and Ellen actually enjoyed herself. Success! (Pictures courtesy of Aunt Betsy - thanks!)

This old girl was eating breakfast ...

And this old and young girl tried to get a picture ...

And this was a REALLY old girl. And, so huge!

We had amazing views of the lions, though Ellen was much happier to step up and down off the fake rocks in the enclosure.

These are four of the five brother lions at the zoo - so sweet.

Hello Hippo ...

The chimps were also very playful today - this little baby was showing off for Ellen. She is about 2 1/2 years old and the zookeeper said they grow up very much like human toddlers. I saw the breastfeeding mother and felt her pain. :)

We also timed our visit perfectly for lunch! All the chimps moved quickly from the glass enclosure area and stood in line waiting for some fruit ...

And even patiently asked!

Ellen insisted on walking or being carried for most of the long trip through Africa and she was thoroughly pooped by the end. A great visit, though, and we will do it again!

I think that Chimp raising his hand should come teach my 6th graders how to do that.
