Looking through the stack of school papers, and specifically at Georgia's wonky George Washington art project:
Ellen: "Mom! Look what Georgia made for money day!"
Ellen is deeply consumed with Rainbow Loom. We usually work on a bracelet every night after dinner and before bed time. One Saturday afternoon she asked to make a bracelet for her friend Nathan at school.
Ellen (sheepishly): Mom. One time I whispered in Nathan's ear that I was jealous of him!
Me: I'm not sure you know what jealous means.
Ellen: Doesn't it mean you really, really like someone?
Me: No. And, no more whispering in ears.
Ellen loves to draw and we've been watching some How To Draw tutorials on Art For Kids!
We scrolled through lots of possibilities one night and Ellen picked Superman for me to draw, then a scary shrouded death skeleton (she likes spooky). I drew the scary skeleton, then she added a tombstone and some flowers. She said she was going to draw words on the tombstone. "What should I write? Sorry you're dead?"
Then the next day, she followed the How To Draw a Zebra tutorial on her own. She was showing off her work and then said, "I'm not done. I'm going to draw the African Savannah and all kinds of creatures."
Me: Great, Ellen! Very creative!
I wandered away to monitor Georgia's destruction and called back to her, "How do you know about the Savannah?
Ellen: "Savannah, Georgia. You know. Easy."
We were invited to a lovely pool party for Ellen's Pre-K graduation. She was changing in the basement bathroom and saw a litter box:
"Ewww. I don't like cats."
Me: you don't?
"No. Just kitty cats. I want one, you know. A kitty cat. A white one."
Me: really?
"Yeah. I know what kind it is. Want to know? They are called Frozen-Doodles."
I was cutting up a giant watermelon and the girls were eating their body weight in watermelon.
Ellen: "Mom ... is this from a watermelon bush or a watermelon tree?"
We were playing Ellen's favorite game of "shop" - I pick up toys and put them in a bag and then we write down the name and price and add it up on the cash register. Ellen was telling me the prices of the items - lots of 70-hundred dollars, 91 dollars, etc. Then she pops up with "that purse costs ... infinity. And Pi."
Me: where did you learn about Pi?
Ellen: (funny grin like it's a secret) Hannah told me!
And she proceeded to explain that it's a number that's so long you can't even count it! And then I burst her bubble and explained that it's really just 3 plus a little bit ....
And then she later directed me to take my items to the "checkout-selfie"
